welcome Avid students to our first Avid video Lesson I hope that you find that you like this format so rather than using up 15 or so minutes of class time lecturing to you I hope that we find that this is an easy way for you to go home watch a quick 15-minute lecture that when you come to class we can just jump right into our activities Okay so directions for this first video lessons you're going to watch this video to learn about the basics of the AVID program now we started this activity last week last Tuesday and class you're going to finish the active on your own through this video Lesson if you watch the video take notes using the guided Cornell Note Paper you received in class and it looks like the image that you see on your screen please remember as you take notes to write your notes on the right side of the paper like what is being demonstrated on the screen for you also quick note I noticed a lot of you guys in class when we were doing this on Tuesday writing in full complete sentences remember when you take notes they're just that note do not waste time trying to write down everything that I say or everything that your teachers are saying in class if you guys try to do that it's going to be impossible you're going to miss a lot of information so as you watch this video use shorthand you guys are excellent at texting use like text language use numbers or bullet points to do more like lift rather than full sentences that way you're not wasting a whole bunch of time writing down every single word and this way killing your hand cuz if you're trying to write down everything I'm saying right now your hand is probably really really tired so don't do that all right so as you watch the video you're going to take your note if you need to pause the video watch the video multiple times if you want to fast-forward it or wind it that's fine you can watch this video as many times as you need to to make sure that you get all the information your notes are going to be due tomorrow Tuesday August 28th I will collect these during prep time after prep time one of our first activities will be at an activity where you show what you have learned through this activity so you're not going to take notes on this video very well you take this activity very seriously so that you come to class on Tuesday you can talk knowledgeably and you complete you can complete our class activity about the AVID program alright so let's get started what Aven Aven is an acronym it stands for advancement via individual determination now I find most students don't know what via means via means through so really what the stands for is it Vance meant through do individual determination that means that David doesn't have it is not the miracle of you getting to college Avid teaches Gill and it's you taking skills and practicing them implementing them every day to the best of your ability that individual determination that's what gets you to college so you will hear we refer to this as the ID that ID that individual determination that is what gets you to your dreams into your goal so when we say advancement via individual determination. advancement through your determination all right so the program for Middle to Upper Middle students middle to Upper Middle academic students to these are typically students that are average maybe like an average student a maybe some eggs here and there may be some seeds here and there but typically you're an average student also with average test scores so that means FCAT scores ranging in the like to 34 level these students have potential for honors and AP work in High School AP stands for advanced placement that is one level up from honors-level and there is quite a difference in colleges would rather see AP rather than honors so that's something that we'll talk about later on throughout the year all right we'll get support from their Abbott Electric and their other teachers you might have already noticed throughout the week that teachers are giving you notes in Cornell notes style you might have noticed that teachers are telling you how to organize their specific tab reminder those are all Avid strategies so you will get help and support through both myself in the spinning in the Abbot class as well as your other teachers I'm in the mission of avid mission is to close the achievement Gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global Society so let's talk about this for a moment. What is that Gap is the number that exists between the number of white students who typically go to college and the number of mine who typically go to college when you're looking at those numbers there's a big difference between the number I don't know the statistics off the top my head but let's say for example if you had a hundred white students go to college and only 50 minority students go to college you have an achievement gap of 50 so that's what this is saying when we look at our national statistics white student there's a large a larger population of White students that go to college then there are minority students and what we want to do is clothes that we want there to be an equal number if there are a hundred Why students are going to college we want there to be an equal number of minority students that are going to college so that's what I was talking about when they say they want to close achievement Gap so you'll notice that the word all is bold there that's the idea is that all students are prepared for college readiness and success all right so the Avid college readiness system a lot of you have asked questions about does avid exist in college and the answer is yes it does so let's work through this graphic organizer that you see on your screen okay that first Circle says Elementary if you don't know David has an elementary program there are a couple of schools here in Orange County that elementary schools here in Orange County that do have the AVID program it begins in 4th grade so you we might possibly soon have students who have been in a bit since 4th grade cuz they can be in in fourth grade fifth grade and then they go to the middle school so yes it does have an elementary program that little circle secondary stand for middle and high school that's what the term secondary mean so as most of you guys know a David is at AVID program exists in the Middle School it also exists in the Heights our superintendent here in Orange county is very supportive of the AVID program so almost every middle and high school here in Orange County has the AVID program which is very very cool all right that lasts which actually says I should say post-secondary but the why is kind of off their the term post secondary means College it means After High School so when we talked about post-secondary schools were talk about community colleges state colleges traditional 4-year universities we could be talking about technical school trade school design schools so it's basically any education After High School that's what the term post-secondary mean now this is fairly new in the AVID program but yes I have it does have curriculum for post-secondary level you might go to a community college or university hear about the AVID program and Seattle strategies which is really really cool. Last but not least it doesn't say I want you guys to know this is not only a Orlando thing it's not just an Orange County thing it's not just the Florida thing as it actually began in 1981 in California an app that is not only a a national program meaning it exists all throughout the United States but it's also an international program there are schools all around the world have the AVID program so you guys are a part of an elite international program which is something that's that's really really cool so you have a lot to be proud of okay so what do we do an avid just really quickly we keep a bind you guys know this because that's what we did all this past week we learned about wicker strategies now this is new to actually added in a new letter to with her and it's the letter O and they're sliding in right between the sea and are so it's actually wicor so we're going to start calling it with cor what that stands for wicker is writing any type of writing strategies that we do writing Cornell notes that's writing it helps you learn it helps you understand so we'll learn more about specific writing strategies the icing for which is a very fancy word for Quest so we want you guys to learn how to question things when you're learning about something we want you to think deeply about it and say okay we'll wait a minute why does it work like that or is it work that way we want you guys to become like little lawyers we want to start questioning what it is that you're learning because it's through questioning that you guys really deep get a deeper better understanding of what it is that they relearning at that moment so we want you to stop being afraid to ask questions and we want you to learn and love asking questions all right that's to you since for collaboration we've already done some collaboration work in class but collaboration is all about becoming a team working together to solve problems working together to become leaders working together just better program so collab becoming a team the oldest missing that stands for organization and as you guys know being organized is a big part of being an avid student so you'll keep an organized binder you guys Master organizers of your time through using a planner so that show is all about becoming organized and last but not least that are are you guys will learn a lot of really cool reading strategies you learn the difference between reading for fun reading for pleasure reading for learning so far stands for reading next bullet you'll learn how to take Cornell notes some of you know how to take Cornell Cornell notes some of you are new to it actually came out with a new program called Cornell way which is a step-by-step system of how to take notes and then how to use your note as a learning and studying tool so even if you think right now you are like the best Cornell Note Taker trust me when I say it was trust me when I say you have a whole new system of Cornell note-taking that you're going to learn all right you're going to learn test-taking and studying strategies which is very important because whether or not you love it or hate it taking test is going to be a part of your educational experience from now until the day that you graduate from college so you might as well just accept it and learn how to take test to the best of your ability all right we're going to participate in tutorial you will complete fun team building exercises we're going to listen to guest speakers and yes many of you have been asking about College field trips yes we will be going on those right so some more specific the Avid binder you guys know what goes in your binder there's actually more that goes into your binder than what's on this slide we have spent the last three days in class going over binder so you guys should be good to go on the binders just a reminder our first binder check is this Friday August 31st you will be receiving a binder check sheets in class and we will go over that so you will know exactly what 6 interview on Friday wicker strategies remember that always in there I've already gone over this on that last flies that talked about what you learn in Avid so I'm not going to go over this in any more detail just remember that that oh was in there for organization as I mentioned before we will be learning a new system of Cornell notes called Cornell way this was put out by Avid because we found it a lot of you guys were doing a great job taking notes but then you weren't doing anything with your note so you would take your notes during class and then you would never look at them again which means they weren't a helpful working or studying tool so the new Cornell waste system is a step-by-step process where you guys take notes and then you interact with your note so that they become a state King and learning tool so we will be learning much more about the Cornell note-taking system alright toriel the 7th and 8th grade students that are in my class which is really miss art tutorial days are going to be on Tuesdays and Thursday as I have already mentioned the RX which stands for tutorial request form you will be required to come to class with these every Tuesday and Thursday I'm telling you right now don't come to class without this form completed that is the expectation of a student so you just need to know that once we start tutorial you will have homework every Monday and Wednesday night and that homework will be to have a tutorial request form ready to go when you come to class our team building activities every time I should say every Friday but most Fridays we will be doing some sort of team building activity where we will play games some of the games might be more like competition bass where we're going each other but the whole idea of this is for us to become a team and you think about all of the national championship teams out there Super Bowl winners NBA winners do you think about any of the best teams out there and they become the best because they learn how to work well with each other they learn how to communicate with each other when they disagree they know how to disagree actually they know how to bounce back when something has gone wrong they don't become complacent they they are willing to become great at something and then continue working so that they become even better at it so that's the idea behind our fun fridays yes we want them to be fun but there's a method behind it there's a reason behind those fun activities that's because we want you guys to learn to work well together if you know how to work well with others that's how you become successful you can be the smartest person in the world but if you don't know how to work well with others you're not going to get very far so that's the purpose behind our fun Friday activities all right and last but not least College you are going to have the opportunity to learn about colleges in careers more than any of the other students at West Ridge Middle School in Avid kind of an underlying focus at all times is the College and Career aspect we want you guys to really research and delve into you know what are you good at and then turning that skill and focusing it into a possible career opportunity and then looking at that possible career and finding colleges and universities that have the best education for that that career or job that you're interested in so we'll be doing lots of college research projects lots of career inventories interest inventories and to support that we will be going on field trips to various colleges and will have guest speakers focusing on different careers and maybe a guest speaker might come and talk to you about their college experience so college is always kind of the underlying theme of avid which is of course why we have are Avid room decorated with all the college gear and why we're doing the national College colors activities during these first weeks of school so that is kind of why College and Career is such an important piece of the AVID program okay this is absolute last live so you are done with the video so take a look now at your notes if you need to go back and re-watch the video fat for posit do what you need to do to get down all the important information that was covered in this video Lesson as a reminder your Cornell notes are going to be due at the beginning of class during prep time on Tuesday August 28th after I collect your Cornell notes you will be completing an activity to Showcase what you have learned about the basics of the AVID program so please make sure that you are completing the notes and watching this video to the best of your ability that way when you come in on Tuesday at you will be able to rock the activity that
